There are a number of Representative positions up for reelection this year. But the one open seat has stolen the spotlight.
With Representative Darlene Hooley's retirement, Congressional District 5 became an open and heavily contested seat. National attention was brought into the race, with the hard, negative primary campaigns of Mike Erickson and Kevin Mannix. Mannix used a last minute attack about Erickson's alleged involvement in an abortion to appeal to Oregon's pro-life Republican base. The attack failed to resonate with supporters and Erickson was chosen to face off against State Senator Kurt Schrader from Canby. And then, there was very little action on the campaign front. Erickson has been accused of other number of indiscretions, like taking a trip to Cuba and boasting his resume with falsities. Erickson took a slap at Schrader for not paying property taxes on his farm, but the ads seemed to fall on deaf ears. Neither Kevin Mannix nor Gordon Smith have endorsed Mike Erickson's mostly self-funded campaign. The NRCC has not backed the campaign financially. Schrader, on the other hand, has the full support of the Democratic party in Oregon, which is expected to support Barack Obama heavily.
The race is close, with final polls putting Schrader and Erickson within the margin of error.
In the other races, the incumbents will almost assuredly maintain their seats.
